Configuration App for Your Flight Control System

In computer systems, a configuration refers to the arrangement of each of its functional units. Often it pertains to the hardware, firmware, software, and documentation. Betaflight – Configurator is a configuration management tool for Betaflight. This utility app lets you set up the features of your flight controller and help you get in the air. You can also use this application to explore other settings and optimize your quad. 

How It Works

Betaflight is a firmware used to fly multi-rotor and fixed wing crafts. Its main goal is improving the way you fly your drone by focusing on leading-edge feature additions, wide target support, and flight performance. However, you first need to download the Betaflight – Configurator to set up your quadcopter in Betaflight. Once you do, you can go through all the necessary setting changes you need to have better control of your drone. 

To start, you will need to connect your FC to your computer where you installed your Betaflight – Configurator. Your computer will power on the FC, and a new COM port should appear in the configurator. Choose the new COM port and tap the connect button to connect your FC to the computer. 

Once you have successfully connected the app and your FC, you should see the setup tab where you can access the most basic functions and information about your quad. You can even calibrate your FC by tapping the Calibrate Accelerometer button. This will give you a 3D model of your quad that mimics the movement directions of the physical version. 

The app also lets you configure your peripherals or the external devices connected to the flight controller using a URT. To do this, click the Ports tab which contains all the necessary settings you need to set up your external devices. 

Configuration Features

Betaflight – Configurator comes with various basic settings related to your drone's flight performance. From system configuration to ESC or motor features, you can change the setup of your FC. You can even change the craft name displayed in the Betaflight OSD for a more personal touch. 

Under the configuration tab, you can also change the settings for anti-gravity, dynamic filter, telemetry, OSD. But, if you are not sure, you can leave them at default since it will still get you in the air without any problems. 

You can also configure some of the setup modes of your quad, including the arming, air mode, angle mode, and beeper. Note that not all modes provided in the Betaflight – Configurator are flight modes. Some are event triggers and features. 

With the modes option, you can set up your drone to have better performance and reduce sudden pitch-downs or dips when changing throttles. It can also help you easily control your drone after it crashed or be stuck upside down. 

Note that you need to click the save and reboot button to make sure that all changes made will reflect.

All in all, drone enthusiasts will find Betaflight – Configurator a great app to have. The software offers various configurable features that do not only make sure that their drone can get in the air but helps optimize flight performance. However, since the app comes with various settings, novice users may find it a little confusing at first. But, once you get the hang of it, you can pretty much change the set up to find one that works best for you.
